CocoonSync | Best cheap bars in Brixton
It’s been a long year. We’ve been in a state of pandemic flux for more than 12 months and never before has one country been more in need of a night out. With light at the end of the tunnel finally starting to appear, it’s time to get a little bit excited about the possibility of a BNO (Big Night Out). There’s going to be laughs. There’s going to be great tunes. There’s going to be food. There’s going to be beer, or wine, or cocktails, or all three. It’s all starting to sound a little expensive.
This is why Cocoonsync has gone to the trouble of scouting out the cheapest bars in some of London’s best neighbourhoods for your long-awaited return to the nightlife scene. In this piece we’re looking at the best affordable bars in Brixton. Known as one of the city’s most culturally diverse neighbourhoods with some of London’s best street food, Brixton is also a fab place for a night out. Home to the Brixton Academy, it’s not rare to find revellers wondering where to get a pint before or after a gig and luckily, Brixton is home to some awesome local spots that won’t break the bank.
What are bars in Brixton like?
Brixton has everything from old school pubs to Caribbean spots and rooftop bars. Whether you want a quiet pint or to dance the night away, you’ll definitely find something that floats your boat in this fun, eclectic neighbourhood.
Barrio Brixton
This colourful, Latin-themed bar is one of four London branches. At Barrio, you can eat, drink, dance and be merry in an atmosphere that’ll have you thinking you’re in Havana. Not only do many of their signature cocktails come in at under a tenner, there’s also a generous daily Amigo Hour as well as daily food deals ranging from £1 Taco Tuesdays to £3 Burrito Thursdays. It’s a great place to get all your mates together, bag yourself one of their legendary repurposed caravans, get a round in and start toe-tapping to the funky beats.
The Prince Albert
The Prince Albert has been around longer than most of its punters and, especially after its 2016 refurbishment, is one of the best places to hit up when the weekend rolls around. Welcoming a diverse crowd of skinny jean-wearing youngsters, old rock ’n’ rollers and everything in between, you can guarantee that the music is always great and the dance floor is always full. Even better, it’s one of the cheapest bars in Brixton, with 2–4–1 cocktails after 5pm and bottles of wine for under £15.
Tequila Mockingbird
We can’t resist a good pun and this one is particularly well-executed, meaning we were already sold before we found out about the two for one cocktails before 8pm every day. Locals flock to this Brixton party spot and by 10pm, everyone’s normally a few Espresso Martinis down and the place is in full swing. The décor is all leather banquettes and neon lights, making it a very chic spot for your BNO.
The Prince of Wales
This bar and club is a bit of a Brixton institution and is beloved by locals for being one of the only places in the area that has free entry, even on weekends. Known for their Thursday night jazz sessions and amazing DJ-led parties on saturday nights, the P of W hosts a Happy Hour every day from 5pm-8pm and also makes delicious wood-fired pizzas. With seriously cool underground vibes and a sprawling outdoor terrace, it’s the perfect place for an affordable night out in Brixton this summer.
The Rum Kitchen
It wouldn’t be Brixton without a bit of Caribbean flavour and in that respect the Rum Kitchen more than delivers. With its winning combination of lip-smackingly tasty jerk dishes, happy hour cocktails — which are, naturally, heavy on the rum — and general all-day-party carnival atmosphere, this is hands-down one of our favourite night out spots in Brixton.
Satay
This Pan-Asian bar and restaurant is known for its cracking Happy Hour, which boasts £3.50 pints (yes, you read that right) and spirits for £4! That and the very reasonably priced food that ranges from gyoza and noodles to Thai curries and satay sticks make this Brixton spot a real gem.
We’re just as excited as you are about painting the town red again this summer. Like you, we don’t want to get carried away and spend more than we can afford, which is why it’s been our pleasure to round up the best bars in Brixton for a cheap night out.
